Marta Jovanović is a performance artist and educator committed to the advancement and development of contemporary performance art.

In 2025, her installation Motherhood was featured in the group exhibition MAMA. From Mary to Merkel at the Kunstpalast Museum in Düsseldorf, dedicated to representations of motherhood throughout art history. The work was previously exhibited at Maja Arte Contemporanea in Rome in November 2022.

Jovanović was an artist-in-residence at the Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles and, in 2017, was the subject of Born Just Now, a documentary by American filmmaker Robert Adanto that received multiple international awards.

Her works—including Pionirka, It is My Body, Love, and Motherhood—are part of major public and private collections. In 2018, her performance BelgradeMermaid opened the Belgrade Biennale and was followed in 2019 by its virtual reality iteration, Mermaid’s Tale.

Curator Kathy Battista dedicated a monograph to her early work, Marta Jovanovic: Performing the Self, published by the Martin E. Segal Theatre Center at the City University of New York. In her book New York New Wave, Battista also positions Jovanović among the most compelling feminist voices in contemporary performance art.

Marta Jovanović is currently Professor and Head of the Visual Arts Department at RUFA – Rome University of Fine Arts.
